What is a sweet romance novel?
On this blog, I define a sweet romance as a book with an overall feeling of hope and/or feel-good vibes. Think lighthearted, PG movie type content but in a book.
Overall is a key word in that definition, because a romance with feel-good vibes doesn’t always avoid hard topics. Sometimes it does, and we get happy, fluffy vibes all the way through the book. But sometimes an author will dive into harder topics like grief, redemption, second chances, forgiveness, etc.
The key is that a feel-good romance will approach even the hardest topics with hope.
Lighthearted romance is typically free of super angsty vibes. Meaning we don’t usually get a “will they or won’t they” vibe between the main characters. That doesn’t mean there isn’t any conflict, but the conflicts are often short lived and not anything too major.
Typically, a novel that is on the sweeter side is also free of explicit content, including graphic violence or sex scenes.

Can spicy romance be sweet, too?
If you’ve been around the Bookstagram or BookTok community you know that the word ‘spicy’ in reference to romance novels refers to the level of heat or sex scenes in a book. Typically, if a book is referred to as spicy it means there are graphic sex scenes in the book.
So can a sweet romance book also be spicy? There was a time when the answer to that question would have been a firm ‘no’. In the past, sweet was almost always synonymous with clean romance.
However, with the rise of dark romance, some spicy authors have started to use the word ‘sweet’ to describe their books in order to show that their book isn’t dark and heavy like a dark romance. So if you are hoping to avoid sex scenes in a book be sure to do your research when you come across a book labeled as sweet.

What is the difference between sweet and clean romance?
This is a hard question to answer, because for the most part I think that the terms sweet & clean go together when describing romance. Or at least the kinds of romance novels I like to read.
I would say that clean usually refers to content: no sex, no swearing or innuendo, and no graphic violence (or very little of these things).
Whereas sweet romance would refer more to the vibes of the book. Meaning feel-good, uplifting, wholesome, maybe even funny vibes.
Why do people want to read lighthearted romance?
There are so many different reasons, but my first answer is a question: why do people read at all?
Most people who read fiction would tell you that the read to escape. Or that’s at least part of the reason they’re reading.
So why do people read romance that is more sweet than angsty? For me it’s because when I escape into a fictional world, I want to be in a world where I know everything is going to be sunshine and roses and it will all work out in the end.
Real life is hard and can be riddled with challenges both big and small. Why would I want to spend time relaxing by reading heart wrenching stories about hard topics that leave me in a funk? The answer is, I don’t. So I read sweet romance that leaves me feeling good as I drift off to sleep!
